Want to know how to best declutter your home? Here are 3 rules that will get you started on the right foot!
Decluttering can be fun for some but not for others. I have always loved to declutter. It is a pastime of mine! Decluttering your space can be fun…or at least tolerable.
To start to declutter your home, you need to start somewhere. It does not need to be a super overwhelming task if you go slowly and do one thing at a time.
After learning these tips, decluttering your home will become second nature! This post is all about the 3 rules to declutter your home.
1. Go One Room at a Time
This is my best tip for decluttering! You don’t have to tackle your entire house all in one day. It’s best to go one room at a time to decrease the feeling of overwhelm. Determine what room you would like to tackle and then go for it! Look through every drawer, container, closet, box, etc., and determine what you would like to keep and what you would like to get rid of. Some questions to ask yourself while you declutter your home are:
- Is this item useful? Is it broken/not working?
- Do I enjoy this item?
- When was the last time I used this item? Did I forget I had it?
- Would I buy this again?
2. Set a Timer
Determine how much time you are going to spend decluttering. Whether it be one hour or one day, stick to what you have planned because it can quickly become very overwhelming. This tip is especially helpful for those of us who do not enjoy decluttering. Setting a timer can also make it fun! It can be like racing against the clock to see how much you can get done in a certain amount of time.
3. Have fun!
Ok, I bet you were not expecting this as a rule to declutter your home. This is one of the most important tips because the most fun something is, the more you’ll want to continue doing it! Having fun will motivate you to declutter more parts of your home, and take it more seriously. Here are some ways to have with decluttering:
- Play your favorite music, podcast, or audiobook.
- Invite a friend or loved one to help you declutter, or make it a competition between you!
- Play the 30-day minimalism game. Decluttering 1 thing on day one, 2 things on day 2, 3 things on day three, etc.
The 30-day minimalism game is something I learned about from The Minimalists. Having fun is so crucial when you decide to declutter your home.
