You may be familiar with minimalism. It’s become pretty popular as of late and for good reason. Many people are longing to live a simpler life, slow down, and not get bogged down with things that are no longer useful to them. If you want to improve your life, you will not regret becoming a minimalist.
Deciding to become a minimalist can be very exciting. Some people are born natural minimalists. Organizing and decluttering come naturally to them. Others need more direction and encouragement. If you are anything like me, you love to declutter and organize but you need reminders and tips to continue in the right direction.
You are going to learn the easiest ways to become a minimalist and start to get your life in order by first getting your things in order.
After learning these steps you are going to learn how to be a minimalist and make it your own! You don’t have to place yourself in a box you don’t feel like you fit in. You can take the concept of minimalism and customize it into your life.

1. Determine What YOU Need.
Becoming a minimalist is a personal process. Firstly, you need to determine what you need in your life. Start by going through your belongings and figuring out what you want, need, and value. Start by asking yourself a few simple questions:
- Have I used this in the past year? Am I planning on using it in the next year?
- Have I forgotten about this item? If you have, it’s probably a good idea to get rid of it. 😉
- Do I enjoy this item?
- Do I value this item?
These are just a few questions to get you started. Decluttering can be overwhelming so try to go one room or one category at a time. For example, decluttering your clothes first, then your makeup, etc.
2. It’s Time to Organize!
One of my favorite things about being a minimalist is organizing my things. Minimalism is not merely about getting rid of the excess stuff. It is about letting go of the things you don’t need so that you can make room for the things you need and love.
Once you’re done with the first step of decluttering, organizing will be a little easier since you probably got rid of many items. One simple rule of organization is that everything should have a home. When something has a specific spot, it won’t get lost as easily. This is also a good way to keep things organized. Whenever I use something I put it back in its home.
3. What Are You Inviting Into Your Space?
Now you are well into your journey to become a minimalist. You may be thinking, “How do I continue in my journey to become a minimalist?” That is a good question. Starting may be easy and fun, but staying a minimalist can be challenging. Your house is decluttered and organized and everything has a home. Everything you own is bringing you joy or is useful to you. Now what? I have become a minimalist but not how do I stay a minimalist?
You must be cautious of your purchases and what you invite into your space. When making purchases or wondering if you should add more things into your space ask yourself a few questions:
- Does this item bring me joy?
- Will I use this item?
- Do I already have something similar that I can use?
- Am I willing to get rid of something else for this item to take its place?
These questions are very helpful for me. It can be a challenge to become a minimalist but an even harder challenge to stay a minimalist!
4. Reevaluate
Every once in a while it’s a good idea for you to reevaluate the items you own. Think of this as Spring cleaning! Every so often, go over your items and ask yourself those same questions you asked when you first started decluttering. Doing this is a good idea because your lifestyle, preferences, and needs might change.
5. Make it Your Own
Now for the fun part! Make this to become a minimalist your own! Minimalism isn’t bare walls and boring decor. It is very personal. It’s up to you to determine what your needs, desires, and goals are for your space. This process is what you make it, so don’t feel like you need to fit into a specific box. Not all minimalists are the same!
